Creating Surface Overlays in a Building

Quick-Start Guide

(For people who don't like to read manuals)

  1. Load the VSP project file called Apartment.vsp. This can be accomplished by choosing File / Open Project from the menu or clicking on the Open button on the main toolbar and select Apartment.vsp from the Open dialog.

  2. Switch to the Room view by selecting View / Room from the menu or by clicking on the Room View button on the main toolbar.

  3. Switch to the room called Kitchen by selecting Room / Next Room from the menu or by clicking on the Next Room button on the Room toolbar.

  4. Choose Edit / Surfaces / Create Surface Overlay from the menu. Select Wood as the surface type and click the OK button.

  5. The cursor will now be a crosshair. Click somewhere on the floor of the kitchen (preferably near the center). Move the cursor to create a rectangle on the floor and click a second point. A brown overlay (of surface type Wood ) is now placed on the kitchen floor. Overlays can be placed on any room surface: floor, ceiling or walls.

  6. The overlay can be moved once placed. Grab the overlay by holding the left mouse button down on the overlay and dragging it to a new location.

  7. The size of the overlay can be changed. Right-click on the edge of the overlay and enter a new value for the segment length. Press the OK button to change the size.

  8. The overlay can be placed in an exact position. Right-click on the overlay and enter new values in the Local X Position and Local Y Position. These are offsets from the local origin point. Press the OK button to move the overlay.

  9. Surface overlays on the floor can be raised off the floor to create simple furniture shapes. Right click on the overlay. Enter 30 for Height Above Floor . Press the OK button.

  10. Samples can be placed on the surface top, on the floor under the surface or on the walls beside the surface. If you have a table you may want to place samples on the floor underneath, but if you have a file cabinet you may not want to take sample underneath, etc. To change the sampling options, right-click on the surface top and change the Check Box options.

  11. To see how these surface types can be used in a sample design, choose Sampling Goals / Show that at least some high % of sampling area is acceptable / Using presence/absence measurements. On the Sample Placement tab, click on Specific Surfaces. Choose Wood and Linoleum on the Surface list. Press the OK button to apply samples to the building. Examine the building and note that samples (blue squares) are placed on the surfaces that are of type Wood and Linoleum .

  12. To remove a surface overlay: right-click on the surface top and press the Delete button.

For additional information on creating surface overlays, please refer to section 2.7 in the VSP User’s Guide.
