The Establish Boundary of Contamination / Partial boundary sampling design uses a special type of sample area called an open-type sample area. This type of sample area is a line or polyline (series of connected line segments). One side of the line is assumed to be contaminated and the other side is assumed to be uncontaminated. The arrow points toward the uncontaminated side (see figure below).
